Posed Versus Unposed Headshots

Unposed vs Posed Headshot

While it may seem like there is really nothing to taking a headshot, and that you can get by with a quick selfie, or snapshot, it is pretty impressive the difference between a professional and a non-professional headshot.

While a headshot is traditionally a shot of just the subject’s head and shoulders, it may not be apparent that posing is essential and can make a world of difference.  If the subject is simply left to “just stand there”, the resulting image is not likely going to stand out as a great headshot. One reason is that as the subject, you just cannot see yourself, and thus without direction, you won’t likely be able to tell what looks good. Another reason is that we tend to typically default to a slouchy or less-than-ideal posture, which does not translate into a polished look. A professional photographer will direct you into a flattering pose to make sure your images will stand out and portray you as the professional you are!

It really is worth taking a little bit of time and hiring a professional to make sure you are standing out from the crowd with your headshots.  After all, your headshot is your first impression, in many cases, and how potential and current clients perceive your brand online and in your marketing.
