We have always read to our Little Man.  Pretty much from day one, we've read to him; more than one book, usually a minimum of eight to ten, or more each day.  If you know me at all, you know that I read. Voraciously.  I recall learning to read as a little girl, how difficult it was at first to remember how to string those letters together to make out a word.  And I remember it all clicking together one day.  It was like what I imagine seeing color for the first time must be like.  The gates of heaven had opened for me and I devoured everything with printed word within my reach.  And I've never stopped.

Mostly I read non-fiction.  I love love love learning and generally will not be satisfied until I've completely exhausted all references on any given subject at hand.  I read a lot.  About a lot of topics, but human behavior and development and self actualization will always be my most favorite subjects.

Now that our little man is almost four, he's able to recognize the alphabet and spell a few short words.  We swear sometimes he can secretly read and is just toying with us... He'll say something before we read it to him and he catches us off guard sometimes.  We definitely don't push any sort of academics on him but watching him learning about the topic that interests him the most, dinosaurs, is a thrill.  He will sit and listen to reference books on dinos for a long time.  We read all the "little kid" dino books at the library, and quickly exhausted the informational books in the "young adult" section as well.  Lucky for us, we've just relocated to a new town and have (hopefully!) and replenished array to choose from!
